It is the mostn currents that can eventually come to reside in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which was first proposed by oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer in 1997. He had spent decades studying and tracking ocean debris and it was he who described the patch as one of the planet's "most important geological features".
